Looking Back at 2014 and 2015 Hobby Resolutions

New Year’s Resolutions! Ah, those promises we make to ourselves and others, the vision we have of doing things different, the hope, the optimism… and the crushing disappointment when it all comes crashing down in mid-February. On that happy note, welcome to today’s post!

New Year’s Hobby Resolutions Questions

I’ve seen a lot of hobby resolutions out and about on the various blogs I follow and I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to see what the other Olympians enjoyed about 2014 and were planning on doing for 2015. I asked them the following questions:

  1. 2014 – What was your hobby highlight of the year? Perhaps your greatest achievement, or a notable first?
  2. 2014 – What was your favourite model you discovered or painted in 2014? Why?
  3. 2014 – If you could do one hobby-related thing differently in 2014, what would it have been?
  4. 2015 – What are your overall hobby plans for this year?
  5. 2015 – What pledges and hobby resolutions have you made?
  6. 2015 – What are you most looking forward to this year?
  7. 2015 – What new thing are you going to do or try this year?

What was your hobby highlight of the year? Perhaps your greatest achievement, or a notable first?

For me the absolute hobby highlight was hitting the tournaments with my Necrons army and not just because I have an unsettling love for my Wraiths (cue Golum-esque “My precioooous!”) but because this was the year that everything clicked in place strategy-wise. I knew each unit’s strengths/weaknesses and I came away from each game win or lose with a sense that I’d tactically held my own. Whilst I’m sure everyone loves the “Trial of a 1000 list changes” stage you go through with a new army, 6 months on and a whole bunch of games under your belt you grow to really appreciate the nuances. Come on the Crons!

What was your favourite model you discovered or painted in 2014? Why?

My favourite model is a slight cheat in that I’d say literally everything Corvus Belli produces for Infinity! The detail is insane for the size and courtesy of Joel’s insanely good painting on them we get to see first-hand just how beautiful these models are. I was sold before even understanding the game mechanics!

If you could do one hobby-related thing differently in 2014, what would it have been?

Not necessarily a change as such but I’m definitely going to organise more boardgame nights. Risk Legacy is just incredible. It really is. In fact if you don’t own it stop reading this immediately go to Amazon, buy it, invite your friends over, play it, and come back… How good was that right?! 5 or 6 of us, good food, good drink, good banter and a brilliant boardgame provide some of the best moments with my friends so long shall they continue!

What are your overall hobby plans for this year?

So myself and painting have had a turbulent relationship mostly involving neglect. It’s not that I don’t love painting it’s just I’m not IN love with painting… meaning much to the enjoyment of the rest of the 12o’s I usually farm out this type of thing to them! HOWEVER, this year its game on, a full 2k battle ready Death Guard 30k army suited and booted ready for Vanquish 2016 is the plan.

What pledges and hobby resolutions have you made?

What I have agreed to have commissioned though is a full Skaven army (starting at 1k and moving steadily up. Yes, Vermin Lord, you’ll be joining the party) and also the Combined army from Infinity! Did I mention Risk Legacy already?

What are you most looking forward to this year?

Even though I am basically guaranteed disappointment I am absolutely buzzed for the new Necron Codex dropping at the end of Jan, No rumours what so ever of Wraiths being nerfed (with amazingly an actual buff in the form of Formations) right before Vanquish kicks in. Perfect

What new thing are you going to do or try this year?

I’ll close this off to say we should always mix our hobbies with personal life. Alongside playing with little toy soliders I’m working towards my first belt in Kickboxing, travelling to Mexico, Singapore, the US and Europe and enjoying a successful year with my new girlfriend. Here’s to an awesome 2015!

Thanks, Pan! Looking forward to seeing your Death Guard blogposts soon.

What was your hobby highlight of the year? Perhaps your greatest achievement, or a notable first?

Towards the end of 2014 we played an 11k game at Warhammer World where 9k of our side were my Orks. Getting to field my entire (admittedly very large) Ork army is a rarity and one that I really enjoyed. The fact that people kept coming over to have a look was a good feeling also.

What was your favourite model you discovered or painted in 2014? Why?

My Ork Stompa! It had been sitting on my desk for a while and I’d finally gotten around to getting it done. It took a week of painting but in the end I was very happy with the result. I’m looking forward to getting another.

If you could do one hobby-related thing differently in 2014, what would it have been?

Maybe I could have added a small Feral Orks contingent to my massive Orks collection. One day I will do a big conversion project army, I have some big plans but they’re mostly restricted to being on paper at the moment. I would have liked to see some of them come to life.

What are your overall hobby plans for this year?

Where do I start? More Warhammer and more Infinity, going to paint Skaven and Lizardmen, build an Infinity board and paint all of my Yu Jing. Oh, and finish the Mordheim board too!

What new thing are you going to do or try this year?

Bristol Vanguard’s Vanquish is going to be fun. I am really looking forward to fielding a double Kill Bursta list, and am also looking forward to getting our Forward Base Kickstarter terrain and playing some Infinity on some really cool boards

What new thing are you doing to do or try this year?

Perhaps I’ll try Warmachine, I’ve been meaning to try it out for a while.

Thanks, Hermes! Have you ever considered doing anything non-Ork related in 40k? 😉

Hephaestus

What was your hobby highlight of the year? Perhaps your greatest achievement, or a notable first?

I have 2 highlights of this year. The first, Vanquish 2014. Amazing weekend of 40k, drinking and quality time with good friends. The second would be visiting Warhammer World and Bugmans Bar for the first time. Another weekend away trip, sensing a pattern.

What was your favourite model you discovered or painted in 2014? Why?

My favourite model of 2014 would have to be the Forge World Salamander Fire Drakes. Followed closely the Forge World’s Legion Fellblade, but I’m not sure that was a 2014 release. Does that mean it doesn’t count?

If you could do one hobby-related thing differently in 2014, what would it have been?

I would have found the time and energy to apply Legion markings to my Salamander force. Those transfers scare the hell out of me!

What are your overall hobby plans for this year?

2015 will see the Salamander force expand with a painted Land Raider, Cataphractii Terminators, Fire Drakes, Salamander Legion Contemptor and a few characters.

What pledges and hobby resolutions have you made?

My pledges will be to get my new gaming table up to playable standards and get my Castigator Knight ready for action in Vanguard’s Vanquish 2015.

What new thing are you going to do or try this year?

I am most looking forward to holding more events as The Twelve Olympians. There’s a couple I’m very keen on and have been gathering terrain/boards/models for some time now. But no spoilers, you’ll have to wait for the announcement!

What new thing are you doing to do or try this year?

We have recently started playing some square based version of 40k (Fantasy they call it? ;-)) and it has been fun. So I see that picking up pace in the new year. I’m also very keen to start a Kill Team campaign and to start our City of the Damned Mordheim campaign on our new board!

Hobby Resolutions - Warhammer Fantasy

Cheers, Hephaestus, glad to hear you’re expanding the Salamanders. I should really get my Alpha Legion out of their case and onto the painting desk!

More Hobby Resolutions Tomorrow!

Tomorrow I’ll be asking more members of The Twelve Olympians the 2014/2015 questions, and even jotting down some thoughts of my own.

Until then, happy hobbying!
