Looking Back at 2014 and 2015 Hobby Resolutions Part 2

Not wanting to leave anyone out, I asked the same questions as yesterday to more of the Olympians. Their answers are below.

Apollo

What was your hobby highlight of the year? Perhaps your greatest achievement, or a notable first?

Undoubtedly playing in the 11,000pt Apocalypse game at Warhammer World across their N’jmegan Bridge table. Hermes and I definitely contributed to the Ork side somewhat equally (my 2k as opposed to his 9k!) and seeing basically half of a 12ft x 6ft table just carpeted with Orks was very special indeed. We managed two turns and the Imperials were absolutely stuffed. Waaagh da Orkses!

What was your favourite model you discovered or painted in 2014? Why?

My favourite release of 2014 was the Ariadnan Antipode Assault Packs. I had been sitting on the fence a little bit about Infinity as I hadn’t played Icestorm and was unsure how good the game mechanics were. And then my beady eyes saw these simply beautiful models on pre-release and I knew that my heart and wallet had been captured. I now have about 50 odd Ariadna models, so well done Corvus Belli – your stunning sculpting has definitely paid off.

If you could do one hobby-related thing differently in 2014, what would it have been?

I would have tried to carve out more time for hobbying, namely mostly painting and assembling. I had a real jolt of dedication when preparing for Vanquish 2014 (but even then I was still painting models at 3am the night before the tournament) and for the Tale of Fantasy Gamers with my Kislevites and I ought to have tried to aim for the same momentum throughout the year.

What are your overall hobby plans for this year?

have so many! 2015 is going to be the year of cleansing and completing. I’m intending, with huge amounts of help from Ares to liquidate loads of my stored hobby paraphernalia to make some space (you can see what a silly amount of stuff I have below) and then I am going to: finish painting Kislevites for the Tale of Fantasy Gamers; complete the painting of the rest of my enormous Tau force; paint my Necromunda gang; paint all my Ariadna Infinity forces; assemble and paint my ludicrous amount of Necromunda terrain; and not buy anymore models until all that is done!

What pledges and hobby resolutions have you made?

I pledge to conquer my hobby butterfly susceptibilities and to complete the models I already own, or die in the attempt.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

I am most excited by the End Times in Warhammer Fantasy Battle. The shake up of the background, the killing-off of intensely venerable characters and the huge ramifications for the game in general have FINALLY made me interested in Fantasy, probably for the first time in about 15 years. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

What new thing are you going to do or try this year?

I am going to paint some Eldar for the first time in my life. I am going to be putting together the beardiest, most unfriendly, most WAAC Taudar (with summoned Daemons!) armylist for Vanquish 2015 in an attempt to win the damn thing, and there’s nothing you can do to stop me! Mwahahahahahaaaaa!!!

Thanks, Apollo, your mountain of hobby stuff looks similar to mine. I think we’re both hobby butterflies!

Zeus

What was your hobby highlight of the year? Perhaps your greatest achievement, or a notable first?

For me I have two highlights for 2014 carried out around the same time. Firstly, myself and Hades setup Fifty Shades of Wray. We had been working towards this for a long time with Hades originally mentoring me with painting (to this day I still send him pics asking how to push the contrast on a mini). It took some time to get all of the assets for the website and social media in place but I am very proud of the work we have achieved both with the site and with the models we have painted.

Secondly was the Twelve Olympians website itself. Shortly after Vanquish 2014 we were discussing as a group how we should document our tournament so that we could all go back to it and remember the awesome weekend. This quickly spiralled into a plan for a full website. This came about around the same time as I was working on the Fifty Shades of Wray site so of course as with all hobby projects I decided taking them both on would be a batch process.

After taking it on I realised how ambitious this actually was and it took a huge amount of effort to get them both ready. Eventually we launched and I retired from posting on my old blog BLOODYdice. In all honesty I have many plans still to put into place for the site but with Atlas’ help we managed to get a good foundation built for the site.

What was your favourite model you discovered or painted in 2014? Why?

Best model of 2014 has to be Nagash. I wasn’t even particularly interested in Fantasy until I saw this model. GW not only upped the standard for Fantasy but created one of their most impressive models to date.

Hobby Resolutions - Nagash

If you could do one hobby-related thing differently in 2014, what would it have been?

If I could do something differently I would have spent less of my free time playing League of Legends and more of it painting models for myself. With Fifty Shades of Wray starting up and my studio being moved a few times I actually painted very little for myself after finishing my Minotuars for Vanquish 2014.

What are your overall hobby plans for this year?

I am determined to get more done for myself. Currently I have a Warriors of Chaos army and Nomad Infinity force already on the painting table looking incredibly red. If I can keep that kind of progress going I will be well on my way with that already.

Warriors of Chaos - Lord on Juggernaut 1

What pledges and hobby resolutions have you made?

I pledge to build my Warhound Titan that has been hiding at the bottom of my shame cupboard for a year now. We need something to face off against Hermes’ Stompa and Killbursta the next time we have a big game.

Then in no particular order I need to build and paint, Horus Heresy Iron Warriors, Raven Wing and Ad mech with some X-Wing repaints along the way. Easy!

What are you most looking forward to this year?

I am most looking forawrd to either Vanquish 2015 as we always have a blast or myself and Hades getting a basing line released for Fifty Shades of Wray. We have been talking to a designer about a model line as well but that might well be something for 2016.

What new thing are you going to do or try this year?

New thing for 2015? That is a tough one. I am constantly trying out new paint ideas. I reckon this year I should put my money where my mouth is and enter Games Day 2015 and some other competitions and see just how my painting stacks up.

Aphrodite

What was your hobby highlight of the year? Perhaps your greatest achievement, or a notable first?

I have two here. The first time in a long time (if not ever!) I managed to get a whole army painted! This was of course my Minotaurs which I took to the Vanquish tournament hosted by the Bristol Vanguard in April. I officially managed to finish 33rd overall, not bad considering the opposition and the army list I took! Due to
some erroneous soft comp scores I would have finished possibly as high as
10th. I’m taking that moral victory!

My second highlight was the Dark Elf release inspiring me to get fully back into the Fantasy scene. The Hackney Area Table top Enthusiasts, HATE club finally managed to secure a permanent venue and so the gaming began. after a long sojourn with my Chaos warriors it was a bit of a shock having missile troops, striking first and not being able to grind down my opponents! The
Tale of Fantasy Painters was a real inspiration and a great motivator. I have to doff my cap to school prefect Ares who with an ever increasingly fastidious eye kept us largely in line and on time with our posts. Many thanks Ares. (You’re welcome – Ares)

malekith

What was your favourite model you discovered or painted in 2014? Why?

Wow this is a big subject! ‘My’ favourite model remains my Raging Heroes Dark Elf Manticore that my beautiful and generous wife got me for my Birthday it remains on my inexcusably neglected ‘to paint’ shelf. Shame on me. However I’m quite proud of my Dark Elf Sorceress. He’s made up of bitz from no less than 6 Dark Elf kits. I think he’s subtly impressive. I’m proud of him.

I don’t think you can discuss favourite or best models without acknowledging Smaug from GW’s Hobbit Range. The beastly thing is truly Epic in scale! Nor can you ignore the new End Times characters. From Nagash and his Mortarchs and Morghasts through the bloated monstrosities of the Glottkin and to the newly released Skaven models. GW really have reinvigorated the Fantasy world.

Mention should also be made to the Books both GW and Forge World are producing. the End Times books are fantastic (even though there are scandalously few printed) and the Horus Heresy saw the forth campaign book, Conquest, released. As ever a beautiful book filled with deep indulgent background, some great narrative led missions, campaigns and rules and of course as standard, some truly breath taking artwork.

Hobby Resolutions 2 - Smaug

If you could do one hobby-related thing differently in 2014, what would it have been?

Quite simply, the power weapons on my Minotaurs. I will be re doing them in the future. This is an area where I really need to up my level in painting. I really must make more of an effort to paint better, quicker. Hobby time is scarce and precious for me therefore I need to work harder. The Twelve Olympians have ever been my rock and inspiration so thanks to them all.

What are your overall hobby plans for this year?

We will be attending Vanquish this year once again and since they’ve allowed Heresy armies I will be building a Mechanicus Army for that event. Tune into the Road to Vanquish blog series for updates.

I’m also helping the HATE club run the Badab War narrative Campaign. The Minotaurs will be coming back for that. Although I have a fully painted army, I’ll be
using the siege Assault Vanguard Army list so expect to see a few unusual units appear in the army. I think I’m finally ready to paint Bronze again! I’d also like to build up my Dark Elves and see if I can attend Throne of Skulls at the newly refurbished Warhammer World.

What pledges and hobby resolutions have you made?

Getting the Mechanicus Army ready for Vanquish in April and being able to take a fully painted Fantasy army to a Warhammer World is a good start I think.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

Vanquish is always a highlight. A weekend away with my friends and other likeminded people is a great escape. I’m super excited to see the Knight Titan Lancer land on my door step. I’ve never entertained a Lord of War before so this is a new area of the hobby for me.

What new thing are you going to do or try this year?

Expanding away from GW (Shock! Horror!) Fantasy Flight Games
are releasing Star Wars: Armada. I missed the boat on X-Wing but as I’ve always been more interested in fleet actions than squadron level affairs I’ll be looking forward to ploughing into unknown waters here.

Hobby Resolutions - Armada

There’s still plenty of time to get involved in X-Wing, Aph. I’ll teach you next week!

Poseidon

What was your hobby highlight of the year? Perhaps your greatest achievement, or a notable first?

Getting a freakin’ Warhound Titan for Christmas has got to be the highlight of my year so far! It is simultaneously the crown jewel and most scary thing I have ever seen. Got the body from my lovely girlfriend and I bought myself an assortment of arms – the Forge World guy at MCM ComicCon was smooth-talking bugger who got me everything I never knew I needed!

Hobby Resolutions 2 - Warhound Titan

What was your favourite model you discovered or painted in 2014? Why?

There have been some lovely models out this year and I am torn between the Cerastus Knight-Castigator (’cause giant sword and what looks like a Vulcan Megabolter) and the model everyone loves to hate – Logan’s new sledge! That thing is so ridiculous, its bordering on brilliant ^^

Hobby Resolutions 2 - Logan Grimnar

If you could do one hobby-related thing differently in 2014, what would it have been?

Finish my never ending Chaos army! It has been pushing nearly 5 years now and really wanted to get them done before start Space Wolves, but y’know, Space Wolves! ^^

What are your overall hobby plans for this year?

Get cracking on my Heresy Space Wolves hopefully with a usable army ready for Vanquish 2015. Finish my Chaos and get started on my Titan!

Hobby Resolutions 2 - Space Wolves

What pledges and hobby resolutions have you made?

I pledge to finally finish my Nurgle-themed Chaos army – about time it got done.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

Starting project Titan with Zeus – we each have one in pieces and want to get a Legio started. Just need to figure out which one.

What new thing are you going to do or try this year?

I have some Infinity models hiding in in a box somewhere – they need to be found and I need to learn to play that game!

Olympians, many thanks!

Readers, I hope you’ve enjoyed it.

I’ll be posting the final two QnAs from Atlas and myself next week, as well as continuing the Confessions of a Hobby Butterfly series.

Until then, happy hobbying!

– Ares
